A Kaleidoscope of Controlled Chaos
Since their formation in 2014, Cats Without Claws have remained one of the most challenging, uncompromising bands in the Phoenix scene. Their raucous mix of hardcore punk, free jazz, and new wave has earned them a reputation as one of the most interesting bands out there
The Quintet established while they were still attending Arizona State University. With an eclectic list of inspirations, they sought to create something original and “never boring.” Between 2014 and 2016, Cats Without Claws released a string of EPs pushing the boundaries of post-hardcore music. After hearing about scene-mate Charlie Barnes creating a new record label, the band approached them, becoming one of the first bands signed by Strangeways. They continued their experimental shenanigans and DIY ethic and released multiple critically successful LPs.
Cats Without Claws are also known for their electrifying live performances, using elaborate stage setups, visual projections, and audience participation. The band is constantly adding new elements to their sounds, with influences from funk, reggae and North African music as examples. The Cats have since gained a cult following, and have been awarded “Best Punk Band” by Audio Alchemy.
